The Fractured Dark (#2) by Megan E. O'Keefe

⭐⭐⭐.5/5

This is the second book in The Devoured Worlds series (review of The Blighted Stars book #1 here)

Sci-fi space opera stuffed to the brim with conspiracies, romantic angst, and fight scenes as our main characters try to save humanity.

This story starts moments after the first book ends, so you do need to read the first book to understand the second.

I liked the insular feel of the first book, our main characters are trapped on a dying planet. In book two they’ve escaped the planet and now are waging a solar system-wide campaign to fight back against this sentient mineral that is taking over people’s brains. The story plot isn’t a straight line, like the first book. Our characters are constantly moving, secrets are being revealed, motives and alliances are constantly changing.

I liked the romance element between our to main characters, but wish it was a little more emotional. I didn’t always buy into their love story.

One of my favourite characters in the last book was the AI on this infected ship. I was hoping it would make a comeback. I’m not sure I’ll read the next book in the series, if there is one.

This book is best read in a printing bay, as you wait for your beloved’s body to be printed. Wait to see if their first breath with be their screams.
