How to make book page overlays
There are so many special editions, book boxes, PR boxes and Kickstarters that include amazing book page overlays; and everytime I see them I really want one! I looked on Etsy and the shipping to Canada is wild. And I’m not ready to invest the cash needed in the special edition of a book I haven’t read yet. So, I wondered, why couldn’t I make one myself? I did the same thing with sprayed edges (check out how to make your own painted edges books)
Turns out, it’s not that hard to make book page overlays!
First I ordered transparency paper, you remember projectors from school back in the day? The same ones! I like that they’re clear. You can do vellum, but it’s cloudy and wasn’t the look I was hoping for. (Full list of supplies and links listed below)
Next I found an image I liked. Make sure if you’re going to make things to sell that you have copyright permissions. This is a one of a kind just for me.
I used Photoshop to remove the background, so I only had the birds, branch and leaves. There are free programs that will remove backgrounds from images, just search for ‘Background remover’ if you don’t have access to a full editing suite. Make sure to size the image to your book.
Then I printed on my inkjet printer and let the ink dry for about 10 minutes.
Then cut to size and you’re done!
Supplied needed:
Inkjet printer (this is mine)
Ruler cutter (this is optional, and keeps your cuts super straight)
