What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Top tier gothic horror, not for the squeamish.

If you want a short, novella that brings you into the story from the first page and immerses you so deep you'll forget to breathe, then this is for you.

Something strange is happening at the House of Usher, a mansion in disrepair where our main character (gender neutral) Alex is told their best friend is near death. When Alex arrives their best friend is frail and not acting like herself. Alex begins to investigate what is happening just beneath the surface in this house, and if they can save their friends in time.

This book is best read in a derelict gothic mansion, one with a crypt in the basement, overlooking a nearby pond. Also there should be rabbits. Lots of rabbits.
