Godkiller by Hannah Kaner
⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
A high-fantasy quest adventure with found family and a cute godling.
In a world where gods and humans once lived together, there was a great war and gods have been outlawed, their shrines broken, themselves forgotten. In the this aftermath we meet a twelve-year old girl who has a mysterious connection to a little god of white lies, and for reasons we don't know, they can't be separated from each other beyond a few meters. The young girl approaches a 'god killer' to ask for help when her family's home is attacked and her family murdered. The god killer, the young girl and the godling decide to make pilgrimage to a lost city full of wild gods for answers. On the way they encounter an ex-knight, haunted by his participation in the war.
With the title, Godkiller, I expected the story to move a little faster than it did. There's still lots of action, but also an equal amount of time spent on character and setting building.
I listened to the audiobook, which I highly recommend. Kit Griffiths does a great job switching between our main four characters, as well as a whole host of side-characters along the way. Her pacing and emotions were pitch perfect.
This book is best read while writing secret letters with lemon juice ink, but stay away from fire, it will only bring bad luck.
