A Fig For All The Devils by C.S. Fritz

⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

A dark, coming of age fairytale story where you'll want Death to be your new best friend.

Trigger warnings everywhere with this book, especially the first chapter, but it's all worth it. The first chapter reads like a Grim fairytale where one of the brothers is having an especially bad day. The rest of the story takes place in present day, following a young teenage boy who has just lost his father to suicide, and sees the Grim Reaper who offers to train him to take his place as Death. Just like a fairytale, in order to become Death our main character needs to complete a series of three tasks. As he completes the task, he begins to debate whether he really wants to become Death or instead choose life.

All of our characters are flawed in different ways, some are struggling to do their best and others have given up all together. The story leaves you guessing as to what is real, what the best path is going to be, and what ending really is a 'happy' one at the end of it all.

This book is best read in the forest while picking mushrooms. If you smell menthol cigarette smoke, it's best to start running.
